Abstract

HNO3, NH3 and NH4NO3 concentrations were determined at two sites in eastern and northern Austria using annular difussion denuder sampling technique. Measurements were performed simultanousely inside and outside of the forest canopy. Average summer daytime concentrations outside of the canopy were 1.4 ppb HNO3, 1.6 ppb NH3 and 0.8 ppb NH4NO3 in a semirural area in eastern Austria. In a rural area in norttern Austria the corresponding levels were 0.5 ppb HNO3 2.3 ppb NH3 and 0.4 ppb NH4NO3. Diurnal variations showed a diferent behaviour for the diferent sites and components. Namely for HNO, large concentration differences were observed for inside versus outside the forest canopy. concurred NH4NO3 measurements show that the decrease of HNO3 inside the forest canopy is not related to tướng NH4NO3 formation and therefore due to tướng deposition.
